『第8話』ヒロミちゃん語る

＜前回のあらすじ＞
カナダに着た理由の一つもジェンダーフリーに関係があると語るヒロミちゃん。思わぬ話の展開で、クリスティーン、ジミー、シンジくんがヒロミちゃんに注目した

用事もないのに何回もテーブルに来るキョウコちゃんがお皿を下げるのをまって、ヒロミちゃんが話し出した。

日本ではまだまだ女性の地位が低いわ。私の会社でも、女性社員はお茶くみをさせられたし、責任がある仕事は与えてもらえなかった。一緒に入社した男性は出世したけど、私にはそのチャンスもなかった。どうせ一度しかない人生だから、自分の力を思う存分発揮できる環境が欲しくなったの。

女性がお茶くみをさせられると聞いて驚いたクリスティーンは、怒ったような表情で言った。

それはひどい差別だわ。お茶くみなんて私だったら絶対断るわ。それに責任がない仕事なんてしたくもないわ。シンジは、女性がお茶くみさせられることについてどう思う？

シンジは、自分が怒られているようで赤くなった。今まで、そんなことを考えたこともなかったのだ。でも、ここは、日本男子の顔を立てつつ、国際人として対面を保とう、などと、とっさに考えながら答えた。

確かにそんな習慣が残ってます。きっと、男性がお茶を出すより、かわいい女性が出した方がおいしいからでしょう。しかし、男女差別という点で、今後、改善されるべきだと思います。

なんだかわけがわからないような顔をして、クリスティーンがヒロミちゃんに尋ねた。

ヒロミは、カナダに来て男女差別に遇ったことはある？

いつも考えていることなので、ヒロミちゃんはよどみなく答えた。

今のところないわ。バスの運転手や消防士に女性がいたり、テレビのニュースキャスターに女性が多かったり、まるで男女差別や区別がないみたい。カナダに男女差別なんかあるの？

今まで会話に参加できなかったジミーが答えようとするより早く、クリスティーンが口を切った。

Kyoko comes back to their table numerous times for no apparent reason. Hiromi waits until Kyoko leaves the table with their empty plates, and starts talking.

Women’s status is still low in Japan. We had to serve tea and important tasks were never assigned to women in my company. My male colleagues, who entered the company at the same time as me, were promoted but I never had a chance. Since we live our life only once, I wanted to live in an environment where I could live up to my potential.

Christine is surprised and looks angry at hearing female workers had to serve tea. She says:

That is terrible discrimination. I would never agree to serve tea and I wouldn’t want to do unimportant tasks. What do you think about women serving tea, Shinji?

Shinji’s face becomes red as he feels like he’s being scolded. He’s never thought about such a thing. He quickly comes to the realization that he has to present himself as a person who understands international values while maintaining pride as a Japanese man. He says:

There is certainly such an old custom which still exists in Japan. It may be because tea tastes better when pretty women serve rather than when men do. But it should be improved in the future since it is gender discrimination.

Looking puzzled, Christine turns to Hiromi.

Have you faced any gender discrimination in Canada, Hiromi?

Hiromi speaks without hesitation since she thinks about this all the time.

No, I haven’t so far. I noticed there are female bus drivers, female fire fighters, and many female TV newscasters in Canada. It looks like there is no gender discrimination. Do you have gender discrimination in Canada?

Before Jimmy, who hasn’t had a chance to speak up until now, can try to reply to Hiromi, Christine takes over.
