What Are the Criteria for Selecting Host Families?
We carefully select host families based on the following key criteria to ensure the safety, comfort, and well-being of our students:
- A genuine willingness to welcome international students as part of the family
- A private bedroom that meets all government safety standards (including proper lighting, windows, and clear evacuation routes)
- A clean, quiet, and study-friendly environment
For homestays in Vancouver, Canada Journal’s homestay coordinators conduct in-person home visits and interviews to inspect private rooms and evaluate the overall living environment, ensuring it meets our high standards.

Where Are Homestays Located?
Due to the rising cost of living in many Canadian cities, most host families live outside of the downtown core. As a result, we arrange homestays in safe, residential neighborhoods that are within a maximum travel time of 1 hour and 15 minutes from downtown by public transit. This allows students to experience authentic local life while still having convenient access to their schools.

What If I Have a Problem with My Host Family?
Your comfort and safety are our top priorities. If you experience any issues during your homestay, Canada Journal’s local support staff is available to listen and help.
We will carefully assess the situation by gathering information from both you and the host family. If improvements are needed, we’ll work with the host to address the concerns. If the issue cannot be resolved and the host family is found to be at fault, we will arrange a new homestay for you at no additional cost.

How Is My Host Family Chosen?
We match students with host families through a thoughtful and personalized placement process designed to prioritize your safety, comfort, and well-being.
Once we receive your completed application form, we carefully review the details you’ve provided. This includes your dietary needs, allergies, lifestyle preferences, personality traits, and whether you are comfortable living with pets or young children. Medical concerns, such as allergies, are treated with the highest priority to ensure your health and safety.
Our placement team then uses this information to select a host family from our trusted network who best fits your profile. We aim to create a positive and enriching environment where you can feel at home, build meaningful connections, and focus on your studies.
While we do our best to honor all preferences, we cannot guarantee that every non-medical request (such as specific ages of host family members or household routines) can be fulfilled exactly. However, we always strive to find the most compatible match based on what is available at the time.
Please note that requests based on the nationality, ethnicity, or background of host families cannot be accepted. Canada is a proudly multicultural country, and such requests are considered discriminatory. We encourage all students to embrace the diversity that makes the homestay experience truly rewarding.
