英語の先生がクラスで、ある本の名前を挙げて、「この本を読むと良い」とRecommendした。しかし、それが単なる提案だと思った美雪さんは、その本を読むかどうかは一人ひとりの判断に任されていると思ったので読まなかった。 それを知った先生は、なんとなく美雪さんに対して怒っているような感じ・・・。 美雪さんは先生の言葉を誤解したのだろうか・・・？

　

Maria: Hi, Miyuki. How has school been?

Miyuki: Fine. I think I am doing OK.

Maria: Are you just doing OK? Are there any problems?

Miyuki: Actually yes. I came across with something I did not understand. My English teacher seems to be upset with me because I did not read a book he recommended.

Maria: Could you tell me about it in more detail?

Miyuki: Sure. My teacher recommended the class to read this particular book, but I did not. I thought that was up to each of us whether or not to follow his suggestion.

Maria: It seems you may have misunderstood what your teacher meant. Although the word “recommendation” may sound polite, it could mean that you are advised to follow that recommendation. So, make sure to pay attention when you hear these words, particularly when it is spoken to you by your superior or authority figures.

Miyuki: Thank you for your advice. I will definitely take your recommendation.
