Recycling

Keiko: What are the three R's of recycling?

Julie: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. First of all, we should reduce the amount of waste. We should try to purchase only what we need and to use less packaging. That way there will be less stuff to throw away in landfills. Once we have finished using things, we should try to find another use for them, perhaps donating them to charity for them to reuse. If we cannot reuse them, we should recycle them rather than throwing them out so that we can conserve the resources.

Keiko: Is recycling difficult to do?

Julie: It is no more difficult than sorting out recyclables and putting them in containers, which you will put out with your garbage once a week for collection.

Keiko: Who is running a recycling program?

Julie: Most communities have a recycling program. You may have seen blue boxes on your curb on garbage day.

Keiko: Oh, yes. I have seen those blue boxes in my neighborhood. I have also seen blue and yellow bags. What are those bags used for?

Julie: The blue bags are for newspapers while the yellow bags are for mixed paper, such as glossy magazines, regular paper, cardboard, envelopes and gift cards. The blue box is for tin cans, plastic and glass containers.

Keiko: Okay. I think I understand Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. By the way, I have another R to add to 3R.

Julie: Oh? What is it?

Keiko: How about Repair. If we try to fix rather than just buy new things all the time, we will come ahead.

Julie: You are right. Now we should promote 4R instead of 3R, thanks to you, Keiko.
